I’ve officially added my first décor piece for the change of season for fall! Fall is one of my favorite seasons, the change of cooler weather, sweaters, riding boots, scarfs, the beautiful colors, apples, ciders, cinnamon. It’s all wonderful.
TJ Maxx Home Goods is my go to store for accessories, and even with their great prices I always search the clearance aisle for an even better bargain. I found this oversized vase in the clearance aisle originally priced $30, marked down to $18. There wasn’t even a crack or chip on it (typically why items head to the clearance aisle)! I loved its size and detail, but the color wasn’t perfect. Rather than passing up on such a deal, I knew a coat paint would make it be a great addition to my home.
Spray paint can be the fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to personalize accessories to fit your décor style, even help pieces be more cohesive as the season style changes.
A layer of primer, and then a matte shade of brown of Valspar spray paint and my teal vase was now an even tone vase that fit in with our décor style better. It was a little too flat for me, so I decided I’d attempt at adding some depth to the piece with a darker glaze.
The candle vase on the right in the above picture was my inspiration for adding black glaze to the piece.
I grabbed a bottle of black paint, a glazing medium, and metallic gold. I wanted the glaze color to be black, but with a hint of shimmering gold that’s why I mixed the two paints together for the glaze.
First you mix the glazing medium 1:1 equal parts with water, then add a 1/3rd of your paint. I mixed it all up, painted it in sections on the vase and then used a cloth to wipe it down. I did a few coats of the glaze on the bottom of the vase, and left it lighter up top to give it an ombre glaze effect. The bottom looks more “worn” than then top and I love the look of it
I’m not familiar with glazing so this was a trial and error for me, and honestly I was terrified as I was doing it up close… I was not a fan. But I set the piece down where I wanted it and sat back for a bit to let it “sink in”. From a far, I really love the depth the glaze gave the piece, and happy I attempted it!
So my next “trick” to cheap décor is using fake flowers, however buying them in bundles can still add up quickly. Either keep your eyes out at Michael’s they often have sales on their fake flowers, or do what I did! This dramatic bouquet was at Home Goods also and it was a large, tall and great collection of fall inspired nature pieces. I loved it and it was only $10! A STEAL. The only problem was it was created to be a free-standing item with the bottoms attached to a base to stand upright.
Simple solution – cut them free and then I’m able to arrange the bouquet as I wish.
It’s a quick simple update but bringing a little of the change of season from outside to the inside. I also love the height and dramatic effect the piece creates with the whole mantel layout.
Our simple fireplace and mantel décor.
I wish our mantel was a little more dramatic in size to be able to fit more décor, but it’s limited and I like the simplicity of the décor.
I haven’t done any updates about my pregnancy on my blog yet, I’m hoping once I set up our chalkboard and get some Chalk pens I’ll be a little better about doing bump updates. I have been pretty vocal about it on Facebook, Twitter and posting updates on Instagram (Username: PBJstories) so would LOVE if you followed along via those medias too! If you don’t follow via Facebook yet, I think you SHOULD! This week I’ll be announcing a super big giveaway that I’m putting on as a huge thanks to all my followers on Facebook! The other week I hit 1k fans! Jaw dropping amazing! So I’m doing a giveaway as a big thanks – and let’s just say the prize is BIG and your choice of colored heart So be sure to join PB&J on Facebook if you haven’t already!
I’ve done a couple bump updates on Instagram and this one was from last Friday. Even though I’ve felt like I’ve had a bump for a couple weeks, Friday morning I woke up and I had popped more than typical! I snapped this and captioned, “Call me the kernel because I’m popping!” Today I’m week 17… three more weeks until we find out the gender!
The first few months of pregnancy were pretty rough on me. I’ve been really sick and totally exhausted so I haven’t been able to do any new fun projects, or sign designs for the shop. Over the past couple weeks I started to feel bit better, at least well enough I was able to add a few new signs to the Etsy shop!
When I was younger (the good ol’ middle school and high school days that is) I wrote… a lot. I would write out any of my messy situations, or just write quotes that “spoke to me”. I used to have motivating quotes everywhere around me… it was a way to look up, and forward.
I’m in one of those moods today, so wanted to share some quotes that make me smile today…
What are some of your most inspiring and favorite quotes?! Sources:12345678
Last week we were up in Minnesota, where both my husband and I are originally from, visiting our families. We are truly lucky that when we return to Minnetonka, MN we get to see both our families, and Jackson gets to see his cousins, aunt, uncles, and both sets of Grandparents.
We had an action packed week and kept busy each and every day and wanted to share some of our great times! So hope you’re ready for lots of pictures and Jackson cuteness
Pretty much the second we land in Minnesota, Jackson is ready for Grandma and Papa’s pool. And he wastes NO time getting in. He absolutely loves swimming.
And showing off his muscles because he’s “so strong”.
Over at Glamma and Cookie’s we searched for frogs and made them little homes. Jackson wouldn’t dare touch them, but sure giggled like crazy over them!
Another super fun thing we get to do is go out on Glamma and Cookie’s boat out on Lake Minnetonka. I swear, Jackson was born to be on a boat. His adorable blonde hair and blue eyes just fit him perfectly as he’s enjoying the waves. His cousin Amelia (two weeks older) and him play SO incredibly well together and behave like angels whenever we’re on the boat too!
Awww so pensive!
At what age do we as parents have to stop telling them to kiss for pictures? THEY’RE TOO CUTE NOT TOO!
Jackson hanging out with his newest cousin Max. He’s gonna be such a good big brother!
Next up on our activity list was a big reason we headed up to MN, Billy’s cousin’s wedding. Meghan got married to her childhood crush, Billy’s best friend from childhood Ben. A fun quick back story – keep up if you can!
Meghan and I were super close friends our whole childhood. Billy and Meghan are cousins. Billy and Ben have been super close friends their entire lives. Meghan had a crush on Ben since day one of meeting him as “kids”. Meghan and Ben ran in “similar circles” but never dated. Billy & I didn’t even meet until 2004 but started dating right away. Billy & I got married in 2009. Meghan & Ben had a “moment” during a dance at our wedding…. where their love began for one another. Meghan & Ben married 2012.
How’s that for crazy!?
Back to adorable pictures of the kids… During the ceremony, obviously Jackson was THRILLED
Courtney (Billy’s sister) and Billy handing out programs before the ceremony. The wedding décor was ADORABLE. It was the perfect backyard wedding with so many rustic sweet décor items … let’s just say it looked like a “Pinterest” wedding for sure!
My handsome husband
My best friend Ashley who is absolutely amazing with kids! She’s amazing to have around not just as a best friend, but always willing to lend hands with our kids. Plus it’s great, they love her back.
How to keep a 3 year old quiet and entertained during a wedding ceremony:
On the last full day I decided to take Jackson to Nickelodeon Universe, the indoor amusement park inside Mall of America. It was the first time he’s gone on any time of amusement rides, and was too cute to see him enjoying himself.
Rollercoaster time with Grandma!
GOODNESS! That was a lot of pictures!!! Well, we did a lot and wanted to share the fun moments!
